Losing Draw

Relegation-threatened Kenilworth kept their survival hopes alive after gaining a draw in a rain affected clash at Warwickshire League Premier Division champions Sutton Coldfield on Saturday. Sutton, who were invited to bat first, totalled 284 for 5 in their 50 overs with opener Mark Guest hitting a fine 102. John Klapper 51no and Lee Thomason 45 offered good support in what proved a torrid afternoon for the Kenilworth bowlers. Jaesh Naik was the most successful by returning 3-104, while fellow slow bowler Ed Ruswa 1-52 and paceman Tom Pope 1-72 shared the other wickets to fall. Kenilworth reached 12 for 1 after five overs in reply when rain forced the players off the field. Play resumed with just 20 overs remaining and Kenilworth faced a revised target of 144 to gain the lions share of the points. James Nason 50 and Chris Prophet 38 blasted 80 off ten overs, while skipper Dave Edmunds chipped in with 21 to leave Kenilworth well placed at 123 for 2, needing 21 runs off the final three overs. But pace bowler Aaron Thomason delivered an inspired spell to claim four wickets for just two runs and leave the visitors on 132 for 6. Kenilworth entertain Bedworth in their final game on Saturday knowing victory will ensure they avoid the drop.
