16/09/2012: Sunday 1st XI v Coventry & NW

Kenilworth Win

Kenilworth’s Sunday 1’s won the Warwickshire Sunday League Division 1 Cup Final – the John Whitehouse Trophy – when they beat Coventry & NW by 42 runs in the 40 overs a side match to cap a fantastic 2012 Sunday League campaign to claim the WSL “double”, after already being crowned League Champions. The Final was fittingly held at the Club’s Warwick Ground in front of a good crowd. Kenilworth posted 243-4 thanks to two stunning innings – from Dave Edmunds, who blasted an unbeaten 91 in which he hit 6 boundaries and 5 sixes and from opener Gregg Peebles who was in sublime form and notched up a hard hitting 83 – hitting 9 boundaries and two sixes. Adie Sellar chipped in with 19, Rupesh Sarvankar 14 and James Nason 10. Mike Cook took 2-47, Matt Horsley 1-62 and Johal 1-55 for Coventry. Chasing, Coventry started well and pressurized the Kenilworth bowling attack to cause nerves amongst the crowd as Jack Horsley 69 and Harry Horsley 65 looked well set and shared in a 140 run first wicket partnership. They made great progress for 27 overs. However, once they fell, wickets started to tumble regularly against an upbeat Town outfit who now sniffed victory with all bowlers claiming wickets combined with an excellent fielding performance. Wily Geoff Edmunds led the way with the ball to take 3-35, whilst son Dave took 2-45, Sarvankar 2-36, Khan 1-46 and Phil Edmonds 1-34. Coventry slumped from 153-1 losing their next 7 wickets for 45 runs. Guy Pearson took 3 great outfield catches whilst keeper Mike Watts took a stumping and a catch behind the sticks. Overs ran out and Coventry closed the day on 201-9, leaving Kenilworth to celebrate their achievement of winning both the Division 1 League title and Cup in the same season.
