Magafas hits maiden Club century

1st XI v. Earlswood

On Saturday 1st July, Kenilworth 1st XI hosted Warwickshire Cricket League Division One new boys and high flyers Earlswood CC.

Chasing a third win in a row, Kenilworth were to bowl first, but the Earlswood openers Edwards and Jackson got their side off to a flying start as the home bowlers were made to toil. The pair they found the boundary on a very regular basis and were  to put on a huge opening stand of 180 for the first wicket.  Jackson was the first man out for 62 but Edwards went on to hit a brilliant 130. Kenilworth kept plugging away and young opening bowler Jono Sparks took an impressive 4 for 44 from nine overs. There were other wickets too for the reliable Jorjeet Singh, the left arm spinner taking 3 wickets for 57 from ten overs, the other wicket taker for the home side was Pat Howard with 1 for 75 off twelve overs bowled. Earlswood posting a massive 305 for 8 from their fifty overs.

Kenilworth, too, made a strong start in their pursuit of 306, as opening bat’s Adie Sellar and Aussie Pete Magafas put on 96 before Sellar was dismissed for 33. Two further wickets fell and Kenilworth fell to 125 for 3, but Magafas was in imperious form and went on to record his first century for Kenilworth. He carried his bat, finishing on a fantastic 129 not out, finding the boundary 19 times and clearing the ropes twice. All rounder Pat Howard chipped in with 22.
In the end, the home side finished on a creditable 217 for 6 from their fifty overs as Earlswood got the better of the drawn match. Wicket takers for Earlswood were Nijjar – Singh with 3 for 33 and Craven with 2 for 32.
 
However, on a day when the bowlers toiled, Magafas made hay in the sun.
