Baker causes mayhem with the ball after Magafas’ and Booker’s fine knocks

1st XI v. Weoley Hill

Kenilworth finally got their delayed Warwickshire Cricket League Division one season underway as they hosted Birmingham outfit Weoley Hill on Saturday 12th May and ran out easy winners .

Kenilworth batting first, openers Dave Edmunds and Pete Magafas putting on 36 for first wicket, before Edmunds was dismissed for 9, Henry Curran joined Magafas, the pair added a solid 54 together for the second wicket, Curran out for 13.

Greek-Australian Magafas was going well, bringing up his fifty, together with Tom Booker, the home side began to get the scoreboard moving, the pair putting on a fine partnership of 89 for the fifth wicket, Magafas falling just short of a deserved hundred, falling for 96, his innings containing eleven fine boundary fours. Booker also made a fine half century, finishing on 69 not out (1 x 6 and 7 x 4), adding an unbroken 37 with Steve Rhodes (13no) for the seventh wicket, Kenilworth ending their innings with a decent 226 for 6 from their fifty overs. For visitors Weoley Hill, Donovan with 2 for 31 and Graham 2 for 39, being the most successful of the Hills bowling attack.

Steve Rhodes and Ian Baker opened up bowling for Kenilworth, the pacemen soon had Weoley Hill in all sorts of trouble, the first wicket falling at seven, then absolute chaos in the visitors dressing room, with batsmen scrambling to find their pads, Hill in total disarray at 9 for 4 in only four overs. The fifth wicket left the visitors 11 for 5, then on the brink at 25 for 7. Only the Weoley Hill number eight Ahmed with 20 and number nine Donovan 12 making double figures. When they were out, the visitors succumbed for just 59 on the 22nd over.

The bowling honours went to Ian Baker with a brilliant 5 for 16 from eight overs, Matt Casey 2 for 15 from six overs, Jono Sparks 2 for 16 and 1 for 11 for Steve Rhodes.

Kenilworth the winners by a massive 167 runs, to start the season in fine style with a great team performance as they WON their Win/lose League Match with ease.
