Saturday 1st XI v King’s Heath – 12/05/2012

Losing Draw

New boy Chris Prophet hit a smart half century as Kenilworth finally got their Warwickshire League Premier Division campaign under way with a draw at home to early season leaders Kings Heath on Saturday. The visitors totalled 222 for 7 before Prophett marked his debut with an impressive innings but his efforts were not enough as Kenilworth, whose opening two games of the season had been washed out, closed just short of the target on 205 for 7. Brothers Gavin Shephard 79 and Stuart Shephard 47 laid the foundations for a sizeable total as Kings Heath cruised to 150 for 1. But the introduction of young off-spinner Phil Edmonds, who returned fine figures of 4-53, halted the visitors progress. Kenilworth lost two quick wickets in reply but Prophet led the fightback by compiling a splendid 51. Gregg Peebles blasted a quickfire 28, which included three sixes, while Lee Melville struck 24 but some tidy bowling from off-spinner Chris Hunt, who claimed 3-27, ensured the chase finished 17 runs short.
