Centurions Whidbourne and Shahid guide side to victory with maiden centuries

2nd XI v. Moseley Ashfield

On Saturday 1st July Kenilworth’s second team travelled to Moseley Ashfield to play their counterparts for their Warwickshire Crucket League Division Seven fixture.

Kenilworth asked Ashfield to bat first – a decision the home side’s openers seemed to enjoy, as Ward and Khan made light of the visitors bowling as the pair putting on an impressive 125 for the first wicket. Ward went on to make 50 and his opening partner Khan 72. The introduction of spin was to slow down the home side, as Charlie Stranks took 4 for 63 and 1 for 34 for Chris Beach, both from twelve overs, whilst skipper Geoff Edmunds also picked up a wicket, finishing with 1 for 45. Hafeez with 38 not out and Bacho 36 not out boosting the home sides total, Ashfield finishing on a very decent 269 for 7 from their fifty overs.
Kenilworth had a disastrous start in their reply, falling to 2 for 1 then 10 for 2 before opening bat Ben Whidborne and number four Mohammed Shahid began to rebuild the innings.
The pair were beginning to bat their side back into the game, both players were finding the boundary on regular occasions, they were to put on a brilliant partnership of 190 for the third wicket and  both players went on to register maiden hundreds for Kenilworth –  Shahid making exactly 100, his innings containing 17 boundary fours and Whidborne made a sparkling 114, his innings filled with 13 fours and 4 sixes. There was  a fine innings of 43 not out from young 16 year old Elliott Haynes-Sorrell, who continued his fine season with the bat.
Kenilworth winning the game by six wickets, finishing on 273 for 4 in the 47th over. Sheals taking 3 for 54 from twelve overs for Ashfield.
The visitors reward was to take 20 points back home, on a day that belonged to Mo Shahid and Ben Whidborne. Well played lads and congratulations on achieving your maiden centuries.
