Alvechurch routed as Chant & Mortlock star with the bat and ball

3rd XI . v. Alvechurch IV

On Saturday 29th July, Kenilworth 3rd team travelled to Hopwood to play Alvechurch 4th’s for their Cotswold Hills League Division Six fixture.

Asked to bat first on a wet wicket, Kenilworth made a solid start as the opening pair of Geoff Hay and Nathan Chant put on 65 together for the first wicket in fifteen overs before Hay was dismissed for 28. The in form Uma Shanker joined young Chant at the crease, the pair adding 67 in fourteen overs for the second wicket but Shanker was caught at mid wicket for 18.

From 132 for 1 the side slipped to 154 for 4 in the thirty fifth over. However, Chant was still going strong, reaching his fifty with a straight drive for four. At 173 for 5, skipper Sam Leach joined him in the middle, several lusty blows from  Leach and Chant saw Kenilworth finish on 216 for 5 from their forty five overs. Leach finishing on 26 not out but it was Nathan Chant who was the star with the bat – he was to finish agonisingly short of his century, ending on 96 not out to carry his bat, his innings containing 7 x 4 and 1 x 6. Thomas with 2 for 39 was the most successful bowler for the home side.

Alvechurch had a terrible start in their reply, losing a wicket to Ed Smith in the first over and  from 25 for 1 the home side slumped to 25 for 5 then 32 for 6, due to an inspired bowling change as it was to became the John Mortlock show, as he got a wicket in his first over and two in two balls in his second over, this was the art of bowling full and straight, Mortlock went on record devastating figures of 7 for 12 from six overs……. not bad for his first game of the season.

There were wickets for Ed Smith, who finished with 2 for 6 from five overs and it was left to young Matt Dadswell to end the game by clean bowling the last man to take 1 for 8 off four overs.

Alvechurch were all out for just 42 in only 18 overs, with only Thomas with 12 making a double figure score.

Kenilworth the winners by a massive 174 runs, and taking the full 24 points for their efforts –  that’s four wins in a row and five from six for the third team.
