Bearley’s Mirza in a hurry to beat the Thirds

3rd XI v. Bearley

On Saturday 7th July Kenilworth’s Third team travelled to Bearley for the second time this season for their Cotswold Hills League Division Six fixture.

As is the norm, the home side won the toss and put Kenilworth into bat, Uma Shanker and Ant Kerry put on 23 for the first wicket, before Kerry was bowled for 8, this soon became 29 for 2, Shanker gone for 9, Andy Dadswell fell for a disappointing 1, Kenilworth in trouble at 30 for 3. Young Will Machin and the experienced Ed Smith were building a good partnership together, the pair put on 53 before Smith was bowled by Castle for 30, Jeff Stanners, after scoring his first runs for three seasons (congratulations!!  …..and even acknowledged by a Bearley player on his send off!), fell for 2, and then Machin for a well played 33, Kenilworth were 101 for 6, then a cameo 21 from skipper Geoff Edmunds, but the visitors were all out for a disappointing 127 in 38 overs. Harris with 4 for 47 and Castle 3 for 19 doing the damage for the home side.

When eventually Bearley went out to bat, opener Mirza looked in a hurry, he soon found scoring runs look very easy, he lost his opening partner Assim for 11, thanks to a smart catch from Will Machin off skipper Edmunds, Castle made a quick 14, before being deceived by Edmunds, lbw. Mirza though kept going, soon bringing up his fifty, Machin had Franklin caught by Ed Smith for 6 and Andy Smith bowled Shakyl for 0, attempting to sweep, Yewer survived a huge shout but was given not out whilst Mirza ended 85 not out, as Bearley reached 128 for 4 off 30 overs. There were wickets Kenilworth’s Geoff Edmunds with 2 for 32, Will Machin 1 for 13 and veteran spinner Andy Smith with 1 for 47 off ten overs. Kenilworth take 4 points.
