Sunday XI v. Ashorne & Morton Morrell

On a glorious Sunday 7th July, Kenilworth hosted 9 man and 2 guests Ashorne and Moreton Morrell in forty overs a side friendly and over 400 runs were scored in a match that had two centuries – one for each side – in a game that the Sunday XI came out on top.
Visitors Ashorne batted first, Openers Wilcock and Finchery were up against young Daniel Barrie and Christian Russ, Barrie bowled a tight first over, Wilcock took ten off the Russ opening over but Barrie struck in his second over, bowling Finchery for no score, the visitors 11 for 1. Humphries was next man in, but he was bowled by Russ for 10, Ashorne 36 for 2. Barrie was in the middle of a fine opening spell, and with the last ball of his fourth over, he bowled the dangerous Wilcock for 19, now 48 for 3. Skipper Husselby was holding his sides innings together, as next man Nash was caught by Dan Horner at slip off Kieran Umashanka for 4, Ashorne 59 for 4. Wilson was then bowled by Matt Dadswell for no score, and the visitors were in trouble on 63 for 5. Husselby was now starting to be more positive, trying to get a score on the board, the visitors lost their sixth wicket with the score on 82, Jay bowled by the returning Daniel Barrie, Jay out for 2. Next man in was substitute player, and Kenilworth player Charlie Stranks, after both sides agreed the loan pre match, Stranks got off the mark with a fine cover drive, he and Husselby were very busy at the crease, looking to accelerate the scoring, Husselby went to fifty, as the visitors passed a hundred, then 150, putting on over fifty together, with the score on 172, Stranks was bowled by Sam Leach for a busy 28, his wicket bought the second loan player to the crease, guest player Elliott Haynes-Sorrell, Husselby was approaching his hundred, and duly did, his was a very good hundred, he retired on exactly 100, two sixes into the fields, over the metal fence by Haynes-Sorrell off Matt Dadswell, trying to repeat it off Dadswell’s last ball was bowled for a breezy 16, the visitors finishing on 203 for 9 off their forty overs. For Kenilworth, Daniel Barrie took a fine 3 for 16 from eight quality overs, Matt Dadswell with 2 for 54 from eight overs, Sam Leach with a quality 1 for 20 from eight overs, Kieran Umashanka with 1 for 44 from eight overs and Christian Russ with 1 for 35 off four overs, as the players headed off for a well deserved tea.
Dan Horner and Darius Potten-Ravenshad opened the run chase for Kenilworth, looking to chase down the score set by Ashorne, both batsmen soon punished anything loose, both men finding the boundary rope early on, going on to share a fifty run opening stand for the first wicket in just the ninth over. I’m the eleventh over, Potten-Ravenshad was lbw to Wilson for a solid 30, the home side 68 for 1. Young keeper Louis Smitheson was on at number three, he didn’t look at all fazed, picking ones and two’s, along with the experience of Horner, the pair went on to add 56 together for the second wicket, during that partnership, Horner went to a fifty off sixty balls, Smitheson was bowled by Wilson for 10, Kenilworth now 114 for 2 on the 22nd over, the in form George Baines was now Horner’s next partner, he too began to knock the ball for one’s and twos, as the pair began to put their side on top, when the score was on 155, Baines mistimed a pull, and was caught at square leg for 14, 155 for 3 on the 30th over. Home debutant Christian Russ was now batting with Horner, needing 49 to win, Horner had one eye on a century, the other on getting his side over the line, Russ was also on positive mode, he too found early boundaries, as Horner now into the 90’s, Kenilworth needed 19 to win, enough overs to get them, Horner on 96, played a lovely shot in front of square leg for four to bring up a fine century, with the win in site, it was left to Russ to hit the winning four on the 36th over, Kenilworth finishing on 204 for 3, to win by seven wickets, Russ finished unbeaten on 20, but the day belonged to Dan Horner, with a magnificent 103 not out off 107 balls with 9 fours.
Kenilworth return to league action next Sunday, an away trip to Knowle Village awaits.
