Ramblers rue the rain!

Sunday XI v. Coventry Ramblers

On Sunday 20th August, Kenilworth hosted Coventry Ramblers in a forty overs a side friendly.

The visitors won the toss and decided to bat first and their opening pair of Stone (16) and Sharma put on 35 for the first wicket, before Stone was trapped lbw by Matt Casey (1 for 48). That wicket bought Hopkins to the crease and he put on  54 for the second wicket with Sharma before he was bowled for 33 by Max Howard (2 for 31).

At 115 for 3, Sharma was joined by Couzins and  the pair put on 57 for the fourth wicket, before Couzins was lbw for 25 off Charlie Stranks, the first four wickets for Stranks and he wet onto finish with 4 for 40 from seven overs. With the fall of Couzen’s wicket, the visitors slumped to 173 for 6 then 191 for 7. Sharma fell to young Will Machin for a fine 82 to one of three catches for Ben Whidborne.

There were late runs for Thomas with 21 and Stuart Hall with 14 as they got the Ramblers to 222 all out in the 38th over. Matt Dadswell took the final two wickets to fall to finish with decent figures of 2 for 21.

After the players returned from tea, the Kenilworth opening pair Danny Boneham and Nathan Chant went out to start the home side’s reply but the early loss of Boneham for six, then Elliott Haynes-Sorrell for five,  the home side were left in trouble at 20 for 2. Three more wickets fell quickly and at 23 for 5, staring at inevitable defeat, the home side were indebted to the weather. With the rain getting harder, the players left the pitch, with Kenilworth struggling at 30 for 5, both teams were unable to return onto the field.

The match was abandoned after only eleven overs of Kenilworth’s reply, saving the day for the side and denying the Ramblers seeing the match to a winning conclusion for them. Instead, it was the rain that won.

Wicket takers for the Ramblers were Tom Hall with 3 for 18 off five overs and Butler with 2 for 10 off six overs.
