Sunday XI v Stoneleigh

Youngsters show the way

Kenilworth enjoyed a 6 wicket win in their Sunday XI friendly fixture against neighbours Stoneleigh in an entertaining affair – a day for colt Nathan Chant to remember as he made his Senior cricket debut for Kenilworth and hit the winning runs as well as taking 2 catches including a superb one handed one in the deep as the ball had seemingly sailed over his head in the deep. Stoneleigh posted 141-8 in their 40 overs thanks to Paul Lazenby who made 36 before a diving catch from Charlie Stranks, one of two he took, ended his knock. Baines added 23 and Venkat 22.  Tom Anscombe was the pick of the side’s bowlers claiming a fine 3-38 with his variations whilst veteran Andy Smith took 2-22 with Sam Leach, Geoff Edmunds and Stranks  claiming the other wickets to fall. In reply, Kenilworth reached 142-4 with 3 overs to spare as openers Ian Summers made 25  with four boundaries and a six whilst colt Josh Palmer made a delightful 39 hitting 4 boundaries. Dan Horner made 19 whilst Steve Kelley hit 18, one more than his 14 ball one over spell had earlier gone for when he developed the yips. Yet, it was left to smiling youngster Chant to see the side home with an unbeaten 13 despite the efforts of Stoneleigh bowlers Jitesh Patel who took 2-16, Jay Patel 1-21 and Phil Chapman 1-24.
