Booker stars but side lose out

The 2017 season got under way on Saturday 8th April for Kenilworth .
A home forty overs a side  friendly against Rugby CC took place  in unusually glorious warm sunshine and cloudless skies.
Rugby opted to bat first and opening bat Qureshi with 44 laid a decent foundation for his side, but it was the number five, Edwards who hit a magnificent 101, as visitors Rugby piled up 286 for 8 from their forty overs. Wickets were shared  for the hosts as  Ed Ruswa took 2 for 44, Matt Casey 2 for 45, Ian Baker 1 for 19, skipper Neil Goodman 1 for 9 and Pat Howard 1 for 46.
Kenilworth were never up with the required rate, only number three Tom Booker with a fine 91 that saw him hit 10 boundaries made any impact on the visitors’ bowling attack. Useful cameos came from Pat Howard 26 and Matt Casey 22 not out. The home side eventually finishing on 182 for 6 from their forty overs. Marshall with 2 for 32 for Rugby, as the visitors ran out winners by 104 runs. as both sides dusted down the winter cobwebs.

1st’s end the season victorious

1st XI v. Water Orton

Kenilworth’s first team travelled to divisional champions Water Orton for their final Warwickshire Cricket League Division One fixture of the season on the 10th of September.

After persistent rain, the two sides were eventually able to start a twenty overs a side match at 3.45 p.m. Home side Water Orton batted first and were soon in trouble at 3 for 2, but Lloyd with 56 and Bennett with 40 put on 83 for the fourth wicket, Water Orton made a decent total of 152 for 8 from their 20 overs as Kenilworth didn’t help themselves by dropping six catches. Kenilworth wickets  went to the consistent Steve Rhodes with 2 for 15, Ed Ruswa 2 for 25, Joe Boyle 1 for 23 and a wicket for  Dave Edmunds 1 for 22 whilst there were also two smart run outs.

Kenilworth started their reply in a positive manner, Joe Boyle with 19, skipper Chris Prophet 22 and Dave Edmunds 37 were all able partners for opening bat Tom Booker who played a classy innings of 68 not out, his innings including 4 x 4 and 4 x 6, putting on 56 with Dave Edmunds for the second wicket and another 56 with Chris Prophet for the third wicket, as Kenilworth finished on 156 for 3, to win by seven wickets with three balls to spare. Kenilworth ending their 2016 League campaign, finishing a credible fifth in Division One with a win.

Dave Edmunds hits an amazing double century

1st XI v. Aston

Dave Edmunds smashed his way to a historic Club record score with an unbeaten 207 in the 1st XI’s drawn game against Aston in Division 1 of the Warwickshire Cricket League match.

He has become the first ever player at the Club to make a double century.

In his  breath taking and  imperious innings, he despatched the ball to all parts hitting 26 boundaries and 9 sixes in the side’s rain reduced innings of 45 overs.

He and skipper Chris Prophet 60  put on 162 runs for the second wicket before the side ended on 312-4 as the Aston bowlers felt the onslaught from Edmunds. Raza took 2-61 and Ilyas 1-45 for the visitors.

Undaunted, Aston set off at good speed as Iqbal 89 (10 x 4, 5 x 6) and Raza 51 (6 x 4) put on 133 for the side’s first wicket. Ansar added 28, Ahmed 20 and Hussain 17 on a day that belonged to batsmen but they fell short of the target and  ended the day on 248-6.  Ed Ruswa took 3-75, Prophet 2-61 and Steve Rhodes 1-33 for Kenilworth whilst Adie Sellar held onto a brace of outfield catches.

Yet, all the plaudits belonged to Edmunds for his magnificent display of quality batting and a place in Club history for becoming the first double centurion at the Club on a day when  560 runs were scored  by both sides.

An afternoon to forget

1st XI v. Four Oaks Saints

Kenilworth 1st XI had a day to forget in their Division 1 Warwickshire Cricket League clash against Four Oak Saints who  eased to victory inside 15 overs after Kenilworth had been skittled out for 93 after 28 overs. The only Kenilworth batsmen of credit were Adrian Sellar 23 not out and number 11 Ed Ruswa who made 9 as the pair put on 28 for the last wicket lifting the side from 65-9.

Minhas had ripped through the Kenilworth line up to claim 5-38 whilst Hipkiss took 4-25 and Van Dyk 1-21.

Four Oaks Saints reached 96-4 in no time at all despite Ruswa claiming 2-25 and Steve Rhodes 2-23 for Kenilworth. Keeper Dan Horner took two good catches behind the sticks but it was Four Oaks Saints who were on song on the day to claim a very easy win.

1sts disappointed with TIED match

1st XI v. Standard

Kenilworth 1st XI’s Warwickshire Cricket League Division 1 match at home  against Standard produced an exciting finish that saw the match tied much to the disappointment of the home side as they lost their last 4 wickets for 7 runs chasing down 159.

Kenilworth’s seamers Steve Rhodes and Matt Dargan had fine games opening the bowling attack. Rhodes took 4-33 thanks to 3 catches behind the stumps by keeper Tom Booker, whilst Dargan although wicketless bowled 8 hostile overs that went for only 11 runs.

The spin trio of skipper Chris Prophet, Ed Ruswa and Charlie Stranks then took over and ripped through the Standard line up despite Vaughan making 46, Windridge 29 not out and Hormanschuk 23. Prophet snapped up 2-43, Ruswa 3-28 and Stranks 1-30.

Dave Edmunds hit a fine 56 with 11 boundaries and Chris Prophet added 48 (7 x 4, 1 x 6) to set the side up for a win but there was an unlikely and  cruel ending as the tail did not wag as the Standard bowlers found second wind to snap up the remaining wickets to leave Kenilworth all out on 159 with 12 overs of the match remaining. Both sides earned 16 points each for their effort which see Kenilworth maintain 6th spot in the Division.
