Seconds are second best despite steadfast Stranks

2nd XI v. Attleborough

Kenilworth’s second team hosted table topping Attleborough for their Warwickshire Cricket League Division Seven fixture on Saturday 5th August.

After rain delayed the start by a hour, the game was reduced to 42 overs per side. The visitors won the toss and put the home side into bat. After a steady but slow start against a very good Attleborough bowling attack, from. 41 for 1, the hosts slipped to 41 for 3. Pete Huxford joined opener Mark Stranks, and the pair began to repair the damage before Huxford was dismissed for 15.

Stranks was ploughing a lone furrow and he was to carry his bat through the 42 overs, finishing on a brilliant 88 not out, his innings containing eight boundary fours, but with little support his side struggled to post a competitive total, Kenilworth ending on 140 for 6 from the 42 overs.

The visitors batsmen looked to be positive in their pursuit of the runs needed to keep them top of the Division. Young seamer Ryan Bull bowled an impressive opening spell, taking 1 for 30 from ten overs in two spells. The visitor’s number three Whitemore, after a slow start began to cut loose, skipper Geoff Edmunds removed the other opener, taking a frugal 1 for 13 from eight tidy overs. Along with Whitemore, number four Russell stated to increase the tempo, Russell was to fall to a smart catch at long off by Danny Boneham off Tom Skinner (1 for 42) but Whitemore saw his side over the line, finishing on 51 not out, Attleborough finishing on 141 for 3 in the 35th over, to win by seven wickets.

Stranks fine efforts with the bat weren’t enough in the end, as the visitors proved to be too strong in the end, as Kenilworth take only two points for their efforts.

Dan Horner joined Stranks at the wicket and both batsmen were able to get the scoreboard moving. Stranks was to be the second wicket to fall but not before the pair had added a superb 133 together in twenty eight overs. Mark Stranks was dismissed for a fine 70 – his innings containing 9 x 4. Charlie Stranks then joined Horner in the middle but Horner was soon to follow having made a strong 50 with 5 x 4, as Kenilworth slipped from 162 for 1 to 164 for 4. However, Charlie Stranks remained steadfast and saw his side over two hundred, as he made 45 not out, together with Max Howard who made 16 not out, The side finished on 242 for 7 from their fifty overs. Tyler with 3 for 47 was the most successful bowler for Coleshill.

But when the skipper Geoff Edmunds introduced himself and fellow spinner Chris Beach, the visitors took total control of the game. The wily Edmunds was to wreak havoc on the home batting, as he ripped through the batting taking an amazing 6 for 18 from ten overs. His partner Chris Beach took the other two wickets, finishing with 2 for 19 off six overs. The home side collapsed from 59 for 1 to 107 all out on 26th over. There were also two catches each for Dan Horner and Ben Whidborne, as the visitors eased to their victory.
