06/07/2013: Saturday 1st XI v Bedworth

Losing Draw

Kenilworth’s last pair of Mark Deeley and Jaesh Naik were the heroes of the day as they denied Bedworth victory. The pair remained steadfast for 20 overs after they came together with the score on 150-9. Deeley, in the number 9, berth survived 80 balls and made and unbeaten 28 in the process, whilst number 11 Naik faced 65 balls and made an unbeaten 23. The pair shared in a 67 run last wicket partnership and saw the side to safety, as they ended the day on 217-9 after defeat looked inevitable. Earlier, the Kenilworth side had slumped to 64-6 which only improved after Gregg Peebles made a solid 64 in which he hit 11 boundaries. Bedworth must have rued their decision at not declaring as they faced their allocation of 50 overs in which opener Ryan Parnell hit a truly superb 211 not out, the first double century in the whole Warwickshire Cricket League this season. In his 157 ball innings, he hit 27 boundaries and 4 sixes, whilst number 3 Jakeman made exactly 100 before he fell, hitting 12 boundaries in his knock. Friswell was unbeaten on 31 as Bedworth posted a remarkable 383-2, with Tom Pope and Matt Bolshaw sharing the wickets to fall. However, Bedworth’s decision not to declare early to receive further overs badly backfired as Deeley and Naik remained steadfast to frustrate Bedworth. They certainly proved to be the heroes of the day in a stunning display of defensive batting that took the shine off Parnell’s earlier efforts.
