Dennis Slater

A post from the Club President

Dennis Slater

It has been a sad week for me, for I only learned of the death of Don Hitchcock when I heard of the death of Dennis.

Dennis’ death brings an end to the Slater’s connection to our Club, for His father Stan was playing when I first joined the Club in the 1950’s. Stan had joined after the war in the late 1940’s and became a player, Committee member and for 10 years in the 70’s our Treasurer. Dennis arrived to watch his dad play and then became a member, his first wife Yvonne was our scorer before they married and at that time it was quite a family gathering at the Club. Dennis later took over as our Treasurer for one year and was a member of the Committee for a number of years.

I played many matches with him and we often opened the bowling together, I can see him now bustling in off his long curved run all action delivery, with as Jack Horner remarked the occasional vicious off break which beat the batsman and left Dennis grinning wondering how he had done it.

He epitomised the Club cricketer of that era, always seemed to enjoy the game and was pleasant and polite to all. He always was supportive of the Club’s activities, attending most social events. After the early death of Yvonne it was a few barren years until he met and later married Di, all who knew them were overjoyed at this and although they were only together for a few years before Dennis lost Di , they packed in a succession of holidays together and enjoyed married life, a salutary lesson to us all.

R.I.P Dennis, all your old friends will recall our memories with you

Gordon Went, KCC President
