On Saturday 3rd August, Kenilworth Thirds made a long trip to Winchcombe for their latest Cotswold Hills Cricket League Division Six fixture only to suffer a 64 run defeat.
Winning the toss, Winchcombe opted to bat first, Openers Lewis and Andrews made a watchful start, Lewis though did hit a six and a four in Matthew Dadswell’s second over, but young Dadswell had his revenge soon after, Lewis well caught by Will Thompson, the home side 20 for 1. Next man in Parker and Andrews then started to build a solid partnership together, they went on to take the singles on offer, punishing anything off line, putting on fifty together, skipper Geoff Edmunds moving his bowlers well, tried to break the partnership, the introduction of Will Thompson did the trick for Kenilworth, as he bowled Andrews for 30, Winchcombe now 94 for 2, this became 100 for 3, Thompson enticing Lambert to drag on for 4. With young leg spinner Dan Roden operating from the other end, Kenilworth were starting to get some control, Roden then picked up the wicket of Palinger for 2, caught behind by Vic Joshi, the home side 109 for 4. This became 116 for 5 when Parker was caught behind by Vic Joshi for a well played 49. Ed Smith replaced Thompson, and soon had O’Sullivan caught behind, Joshi with another catch, a cameo from M. Orzel, but Smith bowled him for 19, Smith accounted for Thomas, bowled for 8, after a fine nine over spell from Dan Roden, Daniel Barrie replaced him, he accounted for number ten Twine, bowling him for 5, P. Orzel ending 12 not out, Winchcombe ending on 173 for 9 from their forty overs. Wickets for Ed Smith, a fine 3 for 21 from nine overs, Will Thompson with 3 for 19 from five overs, Matt Dadswell with 1 for 27 off seven overs, Daniel Barrie with 1 for 25 from five overs and Dan Roden with 1 for 45 from nine overs, as the players headed off for tea.
Kenilworth had a disastrous start in their reply, losing two wickets in the first over, after a run to Geoff Edmunds first ball, Dan Roden was bowled by Lambert second ball then Louis Smitheson also bowled his second ball by Lambert, 1 for 2 after one over. Gareth Knights joined Edmunds, Knights looked in good touch, two nice fours, but on 11, Lambert got one to flick the glove of Knights, caught behind, Kenilworth reeling on 13 for 3 in the 5th over, Edmunds then fell to the same combination, Edmunds out for 4, 21 for 4 in the seventh over. Will Thompson had only made 2, Lambert on a roll, bowling Thompson for unbelievable figures of 5 for 9 off five overs, 30 for 5 after ten overs. Now Yas Joshi was batting with Vic Joshi, the pair added 24 together in four overs, when Vic was bowled by Twine for 14, Andy Dadswell joined young Joshi now, these two added 18 in five overs, after Dadswell hit Andrews for a six and a four in the same over, he was bowled by Twine for 14, Kenilworth 72 for 7 in just the 16th over. Next man in Ed Smith looked to be positive, a series of fours, but he lost partner Yas Joshi, caught off Parker for a well made 17, 84 for 8. Smith was joined by Matt Dadswell, after Dadswell got off the mark, Smith then took the side past the hundred, but on 109, Dadswell was caught off the returning Lambert, then Last man in Daniel Barrie fell to Lambert, as Kenilworth were all out 109 in the 27th over, Smith left stranded on 28 not out, with six fours. Lambert destroying the Kenilworth batting with 7 for 19 from seven overs, Winchcombe the winners by 64 runs, a better start and Kenilworth would have been in this game, story of the season, fragile batting.
Kenilworth take 5 points and remain in the relegation places.
