Smithson holds firm to guide side to victory

Sunday XI ‘B’ v. Hockley Heath

40 overs a side friendly

WIN

Hockley Heath 170-9 (40 overs) lost to Kenilworth Sunday XI ‘B’ 129-9 (29.2 overs) by 1 wicket (rain affected match)

In a rain affected match, Kenilworth had veteran Dave Smithson to thank as they reached their target with 4 balls of the match to spare with their last wicket standing to claim a very narrow one wicket win.

Hockley Heath had posted 170-9 from their 40 overs as Murtaza top scored for the side hitting 26 and Irfan 25, although extras totalled 43, including 22 wides after some wayward Town bowling. However, Christian Mortlock took 3-21 and two outfield catches for Kenilworth whilst Deen Shafiq claimed 2-29 and young Dan Barrie a fine 2-10 off his 8 overs of leg spin. There was a wicket each for fellow youngsters James Sparks 1-30 and Louis Smithson 1-23.

Kenilworth lost 10 overs to the rain and their batting target was reduced to 128 off 30 overs. It was number three, Smithson who held the innings together as he regularly lost partners on his way to a match winning unbeaten 58 (only 2 x 4) with only 4 balls left of the match when 9 wickets down in a match that could have gone either way but he struck the ball past the bowler for two crucial runs that gave the side a win. Earlier, Barrie had made 16 and Will Thompson 12, the only two others to reach double figures as Aktar took 3-27, Arfan 2-13, Murtaza 2-33 and Raheel 1-11 for the visitors in an entertaining and close match that saw Kenilworth the narrow winners in the last over.
