Success in Sunday season’s opener

Sunday XI v. Leek Wootton

 

On a chilly Sunday 7th April, Kenilworth CC hosted near neighbours Leek Wootton CC for the first Sunday fixture of the season.
As the same as normal for Sunday games, both sides have forty overs each.

Having lost the toss, home captain Elliott Haynes Sorrell was asked to bat first by Wootton skipper Stuart Budd. Henry Curran and David Edmunds opened up for the home side, the pair made a steady and watchful start, the pair began to get the scoreboard moving, they had just bought up the first fifty opening stand of the season, at 53 Curran was brilliantly caught at mid wicket by Budd, Curran out for 13. Young batsman George Baines joined Edmunds, both players looked in good touch, Edmunds in particular starting to find the boundary, going on to bring up a fine half century, he was to fall soon after for 62 off 80 balls, with 8 x 4, the pair adding 53 together. Debutant Joe Atkinson joined Baines, but fell to another sharp catch by Budd, going for 6.

Skipper Haynes Sorrell joined young Baines, both played with aggressive intensity, along with some inventive hitting by Sorrell, including two stylish sixes. Baines fell near the end of innings for a fine forty. Haynes Sorrell with 28 not out, got his side to 198 for 4 from their forty overs. For visitors Leek Wootton, Vakil taking 2 for 26, as the players headed off for tea.

On the resumption, the Wootton openers looked to chase down their target, but bowling the first over, Dave Gamble, bowling from the bottom end, struck straight away, bowling the Wootton opener Burge for one , his opening partner, young Matthew Dadswell, bowling from the pavilion end, struck with his first ball of the season, Henry Curran taking the catch at extra cover to dismiss Jenkins for 5. The visitors 6 for 2 off two overs.

Skipper Stuart Budd joined Homer, looking to rebuild their sides innings, they went on to add 69 together before Homer was bowled by debutant George Jeyaratnam for 24, Jeyaratnam replaced Gamble from the bottom end, with the next ball the Wootton number five was run out via a direct throw from Henry Curran, the visitors in trouble on 75 for 4, a lot now depending on Budd, he went on to make a fine fifty, Wootton slipped to 111 for 6 thanks to Jeyaratnam and Tom Skinner Budd still at the crease. Joe Atkinson replaced Jeyaratnam, and struck with his second ball, Wotton’s eighth wicket fell on 150, thanks to a run out from Matthew Dadswell, Atkinson removed Budd lbw for fine 76, 151 for 9 became 153 all out, another lbw for Atkinson, Leek Wootton all out for 153 in twenty nine overs.

Wickets shared for the home side, Joe Atkinson with 3 for 25 off six overs, George Jeyaratnam 2 for 17 off five overs, Dave Gamble and Matthew Dadswell both with 1 for 22 and a wicket for Tom Skinner with 1 for 33.
Kenilworth winning their first match of the season by forty five runs.
