Second XI’s game ends in stalemate

On Saturday 11th May, Kenilworth’s second team hosted Wishaw seconds for their Warwickshire County Cricket League Division Eight fixture in a match that peetered out for a draw as wickets were at a premium on a day when only 6 were taken during the match as Kenilworth were unable to get anywhere close to the target that had been set by the visitors.

Winning the toss, home captain Dan Horner asked visitors Wishaw to bat first. The visitors made a solid start, with Smith and Muhammed Shahid looking to be positive, but Smith was caught by Pete Alty off the bowling of Sam Leach for 20, Wishaw 39 for 1. His wicket brought Ahmed Shahid to the crease, these two batsmen were looking to be positive, punishing any bowling that was off line and length, they also made the most of several missed opportunities in the field, as Kenilworth failed to take a number of chances that came their way. The home side were punished, the batters went on to put a hundred run stand together, when Pete Alty held his second catch, this time off the bowling of Tom Skinner, Muhammed Shahid out for 58, Wishaw 140 for 2. Magic now joined Ahmed Shahid, putting on 45 together, when Magic was caught by Sam Leach off the bowling of nick Moore for 20, the visitors 185 for 3. Baker was next man in, he and Shahid were to bat out the remaining overs together, Shahid going on to make 104 not out and Baker 24 not out, as Wishaw finishing on a decent 248 for 3 from their fifty overs, as the Kenilworth bowler’s toiled. Wickets for Sam Leach with 1 for 40 off twelve overs, Tom Skinner with 1 for 71 off twelve overs and 1 for 72 for Nick Moore.

After the tea interval, the Kenilworth opener’s Mark Stranks and Sam Leach strode to the crease, runs were hard to come by, Wishaw opening bowler’s Poulton and Billingham gave nothing away, with the score on 10 Leach was caught by Wright off Billingham for 3. David Barclay joined Stranks, but both players found scoring tough, the home side never looked like threatening the visitors total, Stranks and Barclay got the score to 55 when Barclay was bowled by David Barker for 22. Skipper Dan Horner was next man in, but still no improvement to the run rate, as the home side crawled along, Horner eventually out for 15 , caught by Barker off Navid. Stranks held firm, as he battled through the fifty overs, ending on 33 not out, James Alty with him on 1 not out at close of innings. Kenilworth crawled to 103 for 3 from their fifty overs. Wishaw tried in vain , but couldn’t force the win, and incredibly using eleven different bowlers, Billingham the pick with 1 for 16 off twelve overs. Kenilworth take 3 points for their losing draw, but not much else.

Wishaw 248-3 (15 points) Kenilworth 103-3 (3 points).
