Kenilworth Cricket Club was proud to welcome Malpas Cricket Club from Newport on Sunday 23rd August for a very special occasion in memory of Jake Powell, a much-loved former clubman of both KCC and Malpas, who sadly passed away last year.
While there was a cricket match to be played, the day was about far more than the result. It gave teammates, friends, family, club members and supporters from both sides the chance to come together, remember Jake and show their support.
There was a fantastic atmosphere around the ground throughout the afternoon, with the bar open, food available and plenty of familiar faces catching up on the boundary. It was exactly the kind of day cricket clubs do so well: competitive on the field and welcoming off it.
On the field, Kenilworth posted a strong 275-7 from their 35 overs before Malpas produced an excellent chase in reply, finishing just short on 260-8. After the match, Jake’s two young sons presented Kenilworth captain Joe Tate with the trophy, providing a touching moment at the close of play.
As the sun set on the ground, the day ended in true KCC tradition, with some of Kenilworth’s finest introducing Malpas to the unique challenge of ‘ridge cricket’. Although light-hearted, it was an unintended but fitting tribute to Jake, bringing the two sides together at the end of the day. No injuries were reported!
A huge thank you went to everyone who helped make the day possible, whether through organising, playing, supporting, serving behind the bar, preparing food or simply being there. A special thank you also went to Malpas CC for making the journey to Kenilworth and helping create such a meaningful occasion for Jake, his family and everyone connected with both clubs.
